For many internationally trained nursing professionals, obtaining professional recognition in Germany is essential in order to enter the German healthcare system. In addition to extensive document checks, the knowledge test is a central component of the recognition process — and the biggest hurdle for many applicants. But what exactly can they expect, and how can they best prepare for the knowledge test?
What is the Kenntnispruefung?
The Kenntnispruefung is a state-regulated examination procedure that serves to determine the equivalence of a nursing qualification acquired abroad and one acquired in Germany. It is mandated by the competent authority if the document review reveals significant differences from German nursing training. The test therefore checks whether a nurse has the necessary knowledge, professional skills and professional abilities to work safely and in compliance with the law in a German nursing environment.
Who is this test for?
The Kenntnispruefung is intended for anyone who completed their training outside of the EU or has a qualification from a EU country that is not equivalent to the German one. If nursing staff with one of those qualifications wish to work in Germany, they require a professional licence, which can be obtained by successfully completing the Kenntnispruefung.
How is the test structured?
The test basically consists of two parts: a theoretical and a practical test. The details may vary depending on the federal state. The theoretical test usually covers topics from the fields of anatomy and physiology, pathology, nursing techniques, hygiene and infection control, expert standards, law and professional ethics, and emergency management. The practical examination takes place in a real or simulated care situation in a hospital or care facility. Typical components include greeting and identity verification of the patient, hand and basic hygiene, care history and situation analysis, planning and implementation of a nursing measure, communication and interaction, documentation, and a final interview with the examination board. The practical examination primarily tests whether the examinee works safely, professionally, patient-oriented and responibly. Difficulties arise mainly in the form of language barriers and highly differentiating nursing concepts.
How do you best prepare for the Kenntnispruefung?
The best way to prepare for the test is to attend a preparatory course. It is also essential to gain practical experience and practise using technical terminology. When studying, it is important to ensure that your learning is well structured and to prepare and practise for the test using case studies, for example.
The knowledge test is the best opportunity for internationally trained nurses to start their professional career in Germany. Even though the exam is challenging, it can be mastered with the right preparation and professional support.
